Christmas is knocking on your door! Everyone is getting the cookies, mince pies, Christmas cake, selection boxes and endless amounts of sweets! Oh, and don’t forget about the Mulled Wine! At this time of the year when people indulge in… almost everything! At The Glenroy Dental Group, we still think about your teeth. That’s why we have put together some instructions on how to look after your teeth this Christmas in Glenroy. So, let’s continue.
1.  Don’t Miss Your Oral Health Routine
In the midst of all the festivities, fun, and eating, don’t neglect your dental health. We understand that following your usual dental routine might be tough after a long evening. But, regular brushing and flossing twice a day is your best defence against the sugar influx that your teeth are likely to experience. Christmas morning is also a special time for your kiddo, but they must brush for the full three minutes.
2.  Choose Cheese, Turkey, And Nuts!
A cheesecake dessert is a healthier option because cheese is GOOD for your teeth. So, after Christmas dinner, enjoy that cheeseboard because cheese helps to restore the mouth’s natural acid balance, reducing the risk of tooth decay. Besides, turkey is also a good choice as it contains protein and phosphorus, both of which are beneficial in fighting decay and strengthening your teeth. Finally, nuts are high in fibre, folic acid, calcium, and other vitamins. So, eat them generously.
3.  Watch The Alcohol
Everyone likes to have a glass or two of wine at Christmas, but did you know that white wine can be very acidic, causing enamel erosion, and that red wine can increase the risk of teeth staining? We recommend that you only drink red or white wine with your main evening meal. And don’t let the festivities keep you from brushing your teeth after a few alcoholic beverages. To remove any stains, leave a gap before brushing your teeth. According to Glenroy dentists, even one glass of wine per day can dry out our mouths, reduce the calcium in our teeth, and cause bad breath. Alcohol is also becoming more closely linked to mouth cancer.
4.  Use Straw
This is an excellent tip for children as well as adults. There will most likely be plenty of fizzy drinks this Christmas, but our dentists recommend using a straw to reduce the amount of sugar that comes into contact with teeth.
5.  Chew Sugar-Free Gum
Chewing gum stimulates saliva, which aids in the removal of any stagnant plaque left in your mouth after eating. Of course, the gum is useful at parties because it keeps your breath minty fresh! But remember that sugar-free gum is healthier for your teeth.
6.  Don’t Use Your Teeth As Tools
Don’t use your teeth for eating through tough packaging and clothing labels or opening beer bottles. It can harm your teeth and lead to a dental emergency which may be the last thing you want on Christmas. So, remember your teeth are not a substitute for a bottle opener, so please refrain from using this party trick!
