Myths About Porcelain Veneers Debunked

Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available for various oral issues. Veneers are thin shells of natural-looking coverings placed on the surface of the teeth used to fix stained teeth, chipped or broken teeth, damaged teeth, and more such dental problems.

As popular it is, there are several misconceptions about the procedure and the final results. But you should have accurate information about dental veneers before you decide on undergoing this treatment. Here are some common misbeliefs and myths about porcelain veneers that our dentists have tried to debunk in the article.

Myth 1: My natural teeth will be removed!

Porcelain veneers are merely coverings for the teeth. They do require trimming down the natural teeth, but this is merely for giving it shape to hold the veneers in place. For proper bonding of the veneers to the teeth, the prepared shells are affixed on the enamel. They don’t go deep. Therefore, your original teeth structure remains intact. Usually, a tooth is trimmed to about 0.3 millimeters to 0.5 millimeters. Our dentists may require trimming anywhere between 0 and 1millimetre. And that depends on the required change in the shade of the teeth and the pre-existing wear. The use of digital technologies has made it possible for our team to design veneers with precision and conservation of natural tooth structure.

Myth 2: I Will Have an Unnatural Smile!

Most people dodge the treatment of dental veneers believing that they might look fake or unrealistic. The concept of veneers to them is extra white, straight, long, and big-looking teeth. Such veneers were probably used in the initial years of their implementation – decades back. You may find people having unnatural veneers, but that is not because veneers are bad.

For some, it may be because veneers have been fitted poorly, and while others may have had veneers for years, say 10 or 20 years, which may have exposed edges of the veneers because their gums have receded, giving an unnatural look.

However, veneer technology today has advanced highly in the past couple of decades. Our dentists at The Glenroy Dental Group use state-of-the-art software and tools to create custom-made porcelain veneers for every individual. The results are aesthetically satisfying, and the veneers are not fully functional, but they look realistic. Moreover, porcelain resembles our teeth and looks like healthy and natural teeth when shaped and placed as veneers.

Myth 3: Undergoing Porcelain Veneer Treatment is a Painful Process

Dental treatments may cause some form of pain or discomfort. But several alternatives can help the patient relax and feel comfortable while our amazing dentists perform the treatment. Our dentists will give you local anaesthesia before they begin the process. So, you don’t have to worry about dental anxieties as our team is adept at caring for all our patients.
