Spring has FINALLY sprung! It’s an excellent chance to get out and about, walk, ride bikes, and send the kids back to the playground!
The fresh spring air is refreshing and gets us up and motivated. With spring comes the urge to clean up, what we know as “spring cleaning.”
We clean our houses, yards, cars, offices, and garages. But we don’t think much about cleaning our teeth.
At The Glenroy Dental Group, we want to be put on your list of things to do this spring! Spring is a great time to get your dental health and smile together for the summer to follow.
Your part in a dental spring cleaning
Replace your toothbrush! Evidence shows that as far back as the ancient Egyptians, we’ve known about the importance of this essential bathroom tool – Egyptians frayed and chewed the ends of twigs to make toothbrushes, since 3000 B.C.
But you really shouldn’t let your personal toothbrush get quite that old. Instead, you should change it about every three months (or sooner, if the bristles are obviously frayed, or you have been sick). This rule applies to manual and electric toothbrushes.
Upgrade your toothbrush. Speaking of electric toothbrushes, this spring may be a good time to consider upgrading to an electric model. Electric toothbrushes offer even more cleaning power than manual ones and remove debris from your teeth more effectively and with less effort.
They are particularly useful for people whose hands are not as flexible or mobile as they once were (e.g. arthritis suffers). They also include nice features such as built-in timers, to ensure brushing time is optimised.
Spice up your flossing game! Do you find flossing every day is a bit of drudgery? You may be more likely to stick with your oral health routine if you spice it up a little! One small change might be to change your flossing game by choosing:
- Flavoured floss: Waxed floss is the most common kind, and it comes in a range of flavours (even unusual flavours, like bacon!).
- Dental tape: Dental tape is a thin “ribbon” of floss that easily slides between teeth.
- Floss picks: Floss picks are a good option if it’s difficult or painful to open your mouth wide enough to use traditional flossing methods.
Don’t forget your dental appliances. If you wear dentures, retainers, mouthguards, or other removable dental appliances, be sure to brush them regularly. Every once in a while a soak in a gentle cleansing solution is also good. And don’t forget to also wash any carrying or storage cases you put them in – these can hold bacteria and gunk.
